UniProtKB description: A pesticidal protein active against Aedes and Anopheles mosquito species; activity on Culex species is strain dependent (PubMed:12957922, PubMed:2833395, PubMed:37642306, PubMed:6874728). It remains toxic to permethrin-resistant strains of An.gambiae (PubMed:23760000). Following activation of the protoxin by mosquito larvae midgut extract (or by chymotrypsin or trypsin treatment) it becomes insecticidal (PubMed:12957922, PubMed:18407662, PubMed:23760000, PubMed:23788176, PubMed:2833395, PubMed:37642306). Causes mosquito cell death by activating a host G-protein-coupled receptor which subsequently activates adenylyl cyclase and increases cAMP production (PubMed:37642306). cAMP activates protein kinase A which sets off a series of downstream events which includes increased exocytosis (probably bringing more receptor to the cell membrane), Na+/K+-ATPase activation and eventual host cell death (Probable) (PubMed:37642306). Another group suggests that alkaline phosphatase serves as the insect receptor and that the protein forms pores in insect cell membranes (PubMed:26112409).
