UniProtKB description: Part of an ABC transporter complex EgtU required for the uptake of ergothioneine (EGT), a natural low-molecular weight (LMW) thiol antioxidant (By similarity). Responsible for the translocation of the substrate across the membrane (By similarity). Also contains a C-terminal periplasmic solute-binding domain (SBD) which binds to EGT with sub-micromolar affinity (PubMed:36481738). Does not bind glycine betaine, carnitine, choline, proline, or cholate (Ref.4). Plays a role in bile acid tolerance (PubMed:15686563). Dispensable for choline uptake (PubMed:15686563). Probably not involved in betaine, carnitine or choline mediated osmo- or chill tolerance (PubMed:15686563). Plays a role in enhancing virulence in mice (PubMed:15686563).
